Here are some general travel packing tips:
- Make a list
Write down everything you think you’ll need for your trip. This way, you won’t forget anything important and can ensure you have everything you need. - Pack light
Try to pack as light as possible to avoid overloading your luggage and making it difficult to move around.
Remember to leave space to take back local items of interest such as Art, gourmet condiments (oils, vanilla, etc.). - Roll your clothes
Rolling your clothes instead of folding them can help you fit more into your luggage and reduce wrinkles. - Utilize your luggage space
Use vacuum-sealed bags or compression cubes to maximize the space in your luggage.
Once we used compression bags to pack winter coats which we could place in our backpacks! - Wear bulky items on the plane
If you have a bulky jacket or a pair of heavy shoes, wear them on the plane instead of packing them in your luggage. - Avoid overpacking toiletries
Only bring travel-sized toiletries and leave full-sized items at home.
Hotels usually provide body wash, lotion, shampoo and conditioner. The nicer your hotel, the nicer these products will be. - Pack a carry-on bag
Pack a carry-on bag with essentials in case your luggage gets lost or delayed.
At minimum you should have underwear, dental hygiene kit and personal care items. Long haul flights require a little more comfort items such as: headphones (with the correct attachments since your plane’s screen may not be bluetooth compliant), neck pillow, blanket, socks, eye mask, ear plugs, lotion & lip balm (dehydration/dryness occur while traveling). - Keep important items in your carry-on
Keep important items like passports, tickets, cash and medication in your carry-on bag where you have easy access to them.
Also, your electronics must stay with you since lithium batteries are not permitted in your suitcase. This includes cameras, and power banks. Your luggage will be pulled and you have to go through the hassle of collecting and packing your item in your carry on. There is the possibility that during this delay, you can even miss your flight! - Check your passport validation before packing
An important item to pack is your passport. Having the physical book doesn’t guarantee that you will make your flight if your validation date is not sufficient!
Your passport must have a minimum of 6 month validation by the date you return home (not when you start your Egotrip). If your passport expires on November 1, 2023, the date of return cannot be later than May 1, 2023 (6 months from expiration). Most countries allow visitors up to 6 months stay. If your passport expires within less than 6 months, you will be overseas with an expired passport! - TSA luggage lock
It is important that your luggage lock is TSA compliant. In recent times, customs have been inspecting bags before they are sent to the carousel for pick up.
If your lock is not TSA compliant and there is the need to access the bag your lock will be removed by cutting it which makes it not usable afterwards. Lastly, a combination lock is better than one that is keyed because you have the additional step of keeping track of not just your passport but also the key to your luggage lock! If a keyed lock is your preference, they do come TSA compliant as well. The last and most preferable option is to have the luggage that has the TSA lock as a part of its feature. A pro tip from experience (and for another story) : set your combination before packaging your suitcase and not at the airport in a rush before it is placed on the carousel at check-in. - Locating device
A locating device such as the Apple Air Tag or Tile.
This will help you to keep precise track of your luggage when you are away from it or in the event that it gets lost by the airline you will be able to advocate for yourself by helping them to narrow down the location of your bag. - Unique Identifier
An example of a unique identifier is a luggage name tag that stands out or a brightly colored ribbon affixed to the handle.
The reason for this is that many travelers have the same or similar suitcases. You will be able to quickly identify your suitcase. In the event that your suitcase is accidentally taken, you can be connected with the details inscribed on the tag. For this reason, it is important to put relevant details where you can be contacted while you’re traveling such as your cellphone number. - Luggage Weight
Remember to always check the baggage restrictions and requirements of your airline before you travel, as these can vary depending on the airline and the destination.
There are no strict weight limits when you’re flying internationally on a long haul flight. However, flights within a country or region may have local airlines dominating the market. These airlines may be budget friendly which means that there are usually restrictions otherwise such as weight.
Leaving from Miami to Paris on Air France the limit may be 50lbs. After a few days in Paris your itinerary continues to Nice by means of Easy Jet where the limit may be 40lbs. In such an instance it is best to pack your bags based on the lowest limit to avoid overweight fees.
